The explanation for why totk’s story is so Not Great and how disconnected from its predecessor it feels being that the devs didn’t want to alienate new players who didn’t know anything about botw’s story just falls apart the more I think about it. Nothing from this stupid half a plot works unless the player is familiar with specific details from the better games that came before it.

The believability of Link and Zelda’s connection to each other hinges on you knowing about the nuance of their relationship in botw. The ancient sages fighting with the champions’ arms and divine beast helms will only be impactful to botw/aoc players because totk doesn’t bother to explain the significance of that callback at all. Fi’s cameo is meaningless unless you either got every memory in botw or finished the master trial dlc (and know about her from skyward sword). You’ll only get the full context of Teba being sidelined in favour of a 12-year old if you played a specific chapter of Age of Calamity’s second DLC. Like sorry but I think Nintendo just made a bad story tbh

One potential interesting aspect of a future Zeev/Fabes dynamic, both in real life and in the RPFsphere is the juxtaposition of loss and success. Zeev winning gold in his WJC-under 18 year, winning NCHC and NCAA championships, doing all of it on the Xcel Energy Center Ice. Brock losing the NCAA title with the Gophers, getting bounced in the playoffs, getting second in the Calder.

Both golden boys, but one who keeps tasting wins and the other keeps being fed losses.

Interesting, to me, at least.

i think about this a lot also in the sense of like, zeev coming in and immediately overshadowing brock as the franchise's new Star Rookie Defenseman. it'd just be extra salt in the wound if he winds up actually getting the calder too (though that would be a long shot). like now suddenly brock is in the background while his more offense-driven partner gets all the flashier statistics and accolades. (again, shadows of the dumba/brodin dynamic.) and of course he's too polite to ever admit that this bothers him out loud. if zeev's doing good, then that's what's best for the team. there's a compelling jealousy angle there.

it's not a dynamic element that's usually what i look for in ships (and to be perfectly honest. if he does come in and everyone immediately forgets about brock i as a general fan will be kind of pissed. that's My Guy.) but i definitely think there are Multiple potentially engrossing narrative threads here.

a bit of a fic I wrote for @majickth's Hermit Hollow AU

Etho had gotten used to the shifts between stations, as the Hollow moved him wherever the locals showed up. He had become accustomed to the feeling of Pass n’ Gas as well, feeling the universe shift to make the impossibility of making a single employee store to a dual and changing it back again. He had even become used to being in two places at once when people came into gas stations on opposite sides of town, holding two conversations between groups so different he was surprised he didn’t get them mixed up.

Etho had never half been in a place before, though. It was a Pass n’ Gas. At first, he had figured another local had wandered in, but then his fingers passed through the magazine he reached for. It was only then that he realized that his usually opaque jacket and mask were slightly see-through and Keralis, who usually picked up on the shifts in one way or another, hadn’t reacted at all, simply greeting the customer who came in.

Despite the warm night, the customer was in a sweater, sleeves pushed up. As he came in, the customer pushed up his glasses and brought a polaroid camera up to his eye, snapping a picture of the seemingly mundane shop. Etho wasn’t sure if the picture caught him, but it probably wouldn’t have looked good if it did. When the customer lowered the camera, Etho recognized him as Grian, the new guy in town, the one who had figured out that Etho’s home station was a liminal space. Apparently the Hollow hadn’t decided whether Grian was local or outsider, friend or foe. It usually reacted that way to investigators. As Grian looked behind the counter towards Etho, the Hollow must’ve decided that it needed to hide this secret from Grian, and Etho was shifted back to his home station.

Grian was still alive the next day, so he either survived the thing Keralis called “Princess” or had never been fed to it in the first place. Apparently the town had decided to let him live another day. Etho knew it was only a matter of time until the Hollow took Grian as one of its own. For better or worse.

This is kind of blowing my mind--I'm American and we are obviously a very big country, but I'm trying to imagine anyone having so much land (or just so much land being available anywhere) that they would have to drive four hours even to reach the edge of their own property

Yeah, I mean!! Australia's a big country, and - globally speaking - no one lives here, lol. I can't articulate to you how small some towns in rural/remote Australia are, despite the country's size, but mm, okay, I'll try, haha:

When I did that particular tour of rural Queensland [I live in Melbourne, Victoria, but 'm from Brisbane originally, which is the capital city of Queensland], it was a part of a creative project funded by the state archive to build a food memory of Q, and a part of that was taking celebrity chefs to remote parts of the state to help people write about passed-down family recipes. It was genuinely one of the most fun jobs I ever had, and I met so many interesting people, and I think about it all the time, haha.

In that, we flew into Mount Isa, which is a mining town, and then just - - drove! For hours! And the landscape just alternates between this:

It honestly is such a unique landscape, and when you're out in it truly, you don't feel like there's anyone else in the world. Like, God, half of Australia's entire population lives between Sydney and Melbourne! That's always crazy to me, especially given the breadth of the country. Jodie Foster filmed a movie here years ago and just said she couldn't believe how much of Australia was untouched, which is a lovely thing to say, but only partially true, of course.

But yeah, like, I also did a year-long freelance writing contract for the Q Department of Education about five years ago, and there are schools there which have literally six students per year level MAX. One school we were preparing child safety documents for was a prep-10 school (a lot of remote schools don't offer year 11 and 12) had eight students total in the entire school.

(Slightly off topic, but a lot of the resources I was writing there were just begging children to stop daring each other to eat kangaroo poo, because they kept getting Q Fever, so there's a little bit of trivia for you, haha).

It's why a lot of kids are still sent out to board in city schools - particularly if they intend to graduate - hence Sam going to school in Sydney doesn't surprise me at all. Again, I don't know if he was a boarder, but Cranbrook offers it and I know anecdotally farm kids tend to board (again, my mum did, and I know a lot of other people who did too), and I know Cranbrook caters to rich rural farming families.

Also just anecdotally, outside of schooling, my sister has been living regionally so when I say she's in family court, she's in a regional one, and one of the things that I hate to say surprised me given what I talk about above was that in the Readiness & Compliance Hearing where a group of us are all getting to hear each other's business, the average time to get to the closest court from remote Australia was 7 hours. So yeah.

Big country, and a very, very dispersed population.
